Pennington named Porter High School’s Student Teacher Intern of the Month March 4, 2016 | Effective Communicators | Porter High School sophomore Chloe Pennington has been named the Student Teacher Intern of the Month for March.

“Chloe has really taken charge of the classroom,” Lisa Mouser, mentor teacher at Kings Manor Elementary said of Pennington’s progress throughout the year. Pennington started off the year very quiet in the classroom, but has really opened up in the classroom.

“My internship has made me grow in ways I never would have dreamed of as a teacher. I have learned the confidence and leaderships skills I need for the job and I have learned that my voice is strong enough to send waves of inspiration to my students to help them grow. I have grown, not physically, but mentally from the experience. I have acquired skills I never had before, and I can only thank my internship for it,” Pennington said.

The Ready, Set, Teach! Program began in 2014 at Porter High School as part of a new degree plan offered to students who are interested in becoming future teachers. Students enrolled in the Ready, Set, Teach! Program take an intro to teaching course their freshman year and child development their sophomore year. Then, as juniors and seniors, students work at Kings Manor Elementary as student teacher interns, one-one-one with a mentor teacher.

Student teacher interns create and deliver lessons in small and large group settings. “This is a new opportunity for students desiring to explore the teaching profession,” said Ashlee Boothe, Ready, Set, Teach! Program teacher. “In college, students usually only experience six weeks of student teaching. In this setting, students are exposed to the teaching profession for two years.”

Porter High School students arrive at the elementary school as early as 7 a.m. to begin preparing for students to arrive. Students are bused back to Porter High School for second period classes.
