Coach's Corner: New Caney basketball's Damien Bates

New Caney basketball's Damien Bates Feb. 10, 2016 | YesMinded | Every week we sit down with an area coach for our weekly Coach’s Corner segment.

This is designed to give a little more insight into what coaches think about different topics.

Q: Best memory as a coach?

A: We do family Christmas’ at my house. So I invite all the players over. We eat, we might play video games. Just getting those boys in my house, letting them see me as a dad and as husband, that’s a cool thing.

Q: Favorite College or NBA coach that you look up to?

A: I would say Coach K at Duke. As many years as it goes back and the program that he’s established and everything that he’s gone through, it’s a pretty impressive run he’s made.

Q: Favorite NBA player current or All-Time and why?

A: All-time would be Jordan. I grew up in the 90’s so I loved that guy. But today, what Steph Curry’s doing with his size it’s phenomenal. I think that we’re witnessing greatness.

Q: If you had to start five of the greatest NBA players of all-time who would they be?

A: Let’s see. Definitely Jordan at the two guard, Magic (Johnson) at the point, Shaq at the five, (Tim) Duncan at the four and LeBron at the three.

Q: Favorite part of being a coach?

A: The relationships with the players, parents and the community. Them getting to know me and me getting to know them.

Q: What do you want your players to remember the most about being coached by you?

A: That I try to do it in a Godly way.

Q: What is a motto you live or coach by?

A: Probably the journey again. Don’t focus on the destination but enjoy the journey.

Q: Favorite basketball sports movie?

A: Hoosiers. Other than basketball my new favorite is Woodlawn.

Q: What NBA or College team are you most a fan of and why?

A: College basketball I would say Duke. Just what he does and the team unity that they have. NBA I would say Golden State. They’re just so fun to watch. They’re up and down the floor, the small ball, the way they shoot, the way they defend. Like I said with what they are doing this season I think we are truly watching greatness.”
